Barbara Comfort, a mystery writer, emigrated to Landgrove, Vermont, in 1943 at the age of twenty-seven. Her novels are prominently displayed at Northshire Bookstore in Manchester, which is described as “the best bookstore in Vermont. During an encounter at the bookstore, a staff member initially refuses to disclose Comfort’s location, reflecting a sense of isolationism associated with the town 3. Despite this, the author discovers Landgrove’s location through local inquiries, revealing it to be near the Bromley ski area.

At seventy-three years old, Comfort spends more time in Vermont, transitioning from four months a year to nearly eight. She maintains a residence in New York City, where she co-owns a townhouse in a historical district, and enjoys a scenic home in Vermont with “cathedral ceilings and rolling glass walls. Comfort’s background includes a career as a painter and designer-inventor, having opened a plastics factory in New York, which allowed her to purchase land in Vermont.

Her artistic endeavors continue alongside her writing, with her self-portrait reflecting her vibrant personality. Comfort’s publishing venture, Landgrove Press, allows her to produce her books independently, which she describes as “fun to read—and a bit shocking—lesbianism, seduction, and murder in small-town Vermont. As a whimsical touch, she has a plastic Statue of Liberty in her yard and offers visitors edible toothpicks she invented.
